Fit-up and surface cleanliness directly affect how the weld bonds to the base metal. When the joints are aligned correctly and the root gap is within specification, the arc can fuse the base metals evenly, producing the intended penetration and a stable root pass. Proper alignment also helps prevent arc wander and excessive reinforcement or misalignment that can weaken the joint or cause distortion.

Cleaning the surfaces removes oil, rust, paint, moisture, and other contaminants that would otherwise create barriers to fusion and introduce porosity or slag inclusions in FCAW and MCAW welds. Contaminants can trap hydrogen or oxide films at the root, leading to porosity, hydrogen embrittlement, or weak fusion. Clean surfaces also promote stable arc behavior and allow the shielding/flux to perform effectively, reducing defects and ensuring the weld bead forms with the correct geometry.
